Shadow AI in the Workplace: Risks, Detection, and Governance

BDO Free CPE Webinars

September 23, 2025 @ 12:00 pm 1:00 pm EDT

Free 1 CPE credit

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly embedded in the workplace, a new form of unsanctioned technology use—Shadow AI—is emerging. Shadow AI refers to the use of unapproved AI models, tools, and agents by employees to boost productivity and automate tasks, often without the knowledge or oversight of IT and security teams. While these tools can drive innovation and efficiency, they also introduce significant risks, including data leakage, privacy violations, compliance failures, and operational disruptions.

Join BDO professionals as this webcast delves into the evolving landscape of Shadow AI, the unique risks it presents, and practical strategies organizations can adopt to detect, manage, and govern unsanctioned AI usage. Learn how to balance the benefits of AI innovation with the need for robust security and compliance controls, and discover best practices for fostering a culture of responsible AI adoption.

Learning Objectives

Demonstrate proactive governance to integrate AI oversight with existing cybersecurity programs and foster continuous awareness and responsible AI usage across the organization.

Define Shadow AI and understand how it differs from traditional Shadow IT, including the types of AI tools and models commonly used without official approval.

Identify the key risks associated with Shadow AI, such as cybersecurity threats, compliance and regulatory challenges, operational impacts, and governance issues.

Examine detection and monitoring solutions for Shadow AI, including Cloud Access Security Brokers (CASB), Data Loss Prevention (DLP), SIEM, and EDR/XDR tools.

Discuss strategies for managing Shadow AI through user education, policy development, AI governance frameworks, and the provision of approved AI alternatives.
