Program Content:The restaurant industry is experiencing pressures unlike ever before, including minimum wage increases, rising commodity prices, an uncertain real estate market and oversaturation. While normal market forces had already started to identify the winners, COVID-19 has magnified these effects, resulting in fewer customers, changing consumer preferences and even forced closings. Grant Thornton professionals will discuss the challenges the industry is facing, and financial approaches restaurant executives can take to bring a restaurant business to stability and/or profitability, including options such as:

– Buy-side and sell-side mergers and acquisitions strategy
– Key restructuring strategies, including but not limited to Chapter 11 and §363 asset sale procedures as powerful legal tools for distressed businesses
– Tax strategies related to debt restructuring and Paycheck Protection Program loan forgiveness and tax considerations related to due diligence
– GAAP accounting and financial reporting considerations

Learning objectives

  • Describe GAAP financial reporting, and tax strategies related to debt restructuring and Paycheck Protection Program loans
  • Identify key restructuring strategies such as Chapter 11 or Section 363 procedures
  • Summarize merger and acquisition strategy options
