Although the community benefit standard has applied to tax-exempt hospitals for decades, leaders in Washington have recently been asking more questions about whether hospitals are providing enough community benefit to justify their tax-exemption and whether the reporting required by the IRS is accurately and consistently capturing the necessary information regarding this benefit.  As a result of this increased scrutiny, tax-exempt healthcare organizations should consider taking a fresh look at their historical calculation and reporting of community benefit and consider any modifications that would more effectively capture the services they are providing to their communities.
