Why Nonprofits Should Care about Compensation

This webcast will provide nonprofit leaders with practical guidance on compensation topics that affect governance, regulatory compliance, talent strategy, and public/stakeholder perception. The session is structured around compensation considerations for (1) board members, (2) executives, and (3) the broader employee group.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss Non-officer board member compensation and when paying board members is appropriate vs. when board service should remain volunteer based.
  • Review how to structure and document compensation to help mitigate risk associated with private benefit/inurement and Intermediate Sanctions (IRC 4958), and considerations related to IRC 4960 excise tax.
  • Analyze stakeholder perception and transparency and executive pay is publicly available via Form 990, increasing the need for defensible pay levels and clear pay positioning.
  • Examine broad employee group compensation including establishing an employee value proposition, determining market-rate pay levels, and designing pay-for-performance approaches.

Information about CPE Eligibility

To receive CPE credit for participation in a BDO webcast program, you must respond to the occasional polls that appear throughout the program and be in attendance for a minimum of 50 minutes. You will receive an email notification following the program if you completed the necessary polls and qualified for CPE credit. This email will include instructions on how to access your CPE certificate.

Please Note: Per BDO USAโ€™s CPE Compliance policy, CPE will not be issued for programs that fail to comply with the NASBA Standards, or to individuals who do not meet the attendance requirements. For example, a professional attending a webcast must respond to at least 3 polls per CPE credit.
